They shouldn't advertise MHz. Shielding could be better. I have only had my HF rig a watt Icom for a short time, but I load tested this for 90 seconds at the full watts and while I felt a little bit of heat dissipation just passive convection I would only say it barely got warm.

If anything, I would say the power curve printed on the front is conservative. It works well and was inexpensive purchased from another ham here.

I agree with WK2X, it does radiate. Once I was running W from my radio on 17M into this while testing some extra fans on my IC to check out thermal management, when I heard some Canadians discussing band conditions and how I was the only thing they heard?!?!

I added some more ground wires from the shield cage to my station ground and no more unwanted radiating. Initially setting this up I ohmed it out and it was infinite. Upon inspection, the resistor had popped out of it's copper clip and had to be reseated much like a barrel fuse and all is good now. It does, indeed, provide a good load for the specified frequency range, and has not complained about running w through it.

However, I've actually been able to make contacts with the thing. One was on 20m from Michigan to Mississippi!

So be careful about assuming that because you're running into a dummy load that no one can hear you. This thing seems to radiate a lot more than one would expect.

Perhaps MFJ should market it as a "broadband indoor antenna.

We'll see. KO1C Rating: Workmanship? Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. I got this mainly to connect to my 2nd unused antenna port just in case I hit the wrong buttonQRZ Forums. Before I get started, the quick answer to this is "send it back", or at least send the board in for replacement.

MFJ 260C Dummy Loads MFJ-260C

What I'm hoping is to get some insight into how this works, or perhaps an option to fix it without having to send it back I bought this for use as a dummyload that could handle legal output power at HF for short periods of time.

I have not exceeded those specs. A week or so ago the meters stopped working.

I took a look inside the case, there were no visible signs of problems associated with this MFJ product bad solder connections, shorts, etc. I opened a ticket with MFJ and they had me test the diodes on the meter board, which turned out to be bad.

They sent some replacement diodes. I also ordered a bunch of the Quad Op-Amp chips just to be on the safe side. I continued using the unit as a dummyload, and then the other night, I switched the dummyload in and started tuning my ALS amp on 80 meters. The amp was already pre-tuned and was just touching up the tuning. Immediately I saw a flash through the grill holes in the case.

I took the meter out of line, opened it up and could see burn marks coming from underneath the toroid that the RF input passes through. This is a very small toroid with three taps.

The RF input center pin passes through this toroid, through the opposite side of the board to an spdt switch that switches in the dummyload or to the RF out. On further inspection, I could the see that the ferrite core was cracked, and the small magnet wire on back where it arced was burned through.

When I probed at the toroid with my finger, it fell apart. This was operating into the dummy load for only a few seconds! My usual practice has been to set all my presets, tune to lowest swr with 5 watts, then tune with amp at the highest exciter power level, usually 75 watts into the dummyload for a few seconds. There is a trimmer on the meter board for calibration.Your JavaScript appears to be disabled. JavaScript is necessary for various functions, such as order checkout, to operate on this web site.

MFJ Dummy Loads are one of the world's most versatile 1. You'll find tons of uses for them. Tune up your transceiver, linear amplifier, or antenna tuner to a safe 50 ohm dummy load at full power.

Then instantly switch to your antenna and monitor SWR toforward, and reflected power simultaneously through the extra-large 3 in. SWR is below 1. I bought one, noticed when I received the package,i heard a rattle. I took the cover off,and re-re the mount screws.

Mine came with all the screws intact. The chassis and cover are not bent. All the rubber feet are attached. Inside, the resistor is well secured and the cover for the resistor is more or less straight. Mine measures Ten percent seems a bit wide for tolerance but maybe that's my way of thinking about it. I don't think I could ask for more, as long as it holds up. My MFJ works fine from 1. This caused me a great deal of headache as I assumed a problem with my radio that I could not find.

Time Owned: more than 12 months.

I've had mine for over 15 years now, and it still works fine. For a full gallon, use a fan, or don't key down too long. The resistance of the dummy load measured I don't know what this would mean in the real world, but I found it disheartening. The connector was an amphenol wanna be that needed to be worked in and out several times. The case reminded me of a Jr.

High School metal shop project. But, of course, you are not paying "lab-grade" prices either. Note the deration table carefully before incinerating this dummy load with 1. It is worth the money for casual use. Beats the old W light bulbs we used in the "tube" days. Well enough built, but I had a B analyzer - it did work, BUT one of the meters was crushed under the lower corner of the front panel hole Replaced that with an AA - Great!Your JavaScript appears to be disabled.

The design of these dummy loads uses a high-quality ohm non-inductive resistor.

One gallon of transformer oil is included with this dummy load and is added to the can during set-up. Modern transformer oil is a better heat conductor and safer than other common forms of oil. Their vent cap is removable, if needed, and a handy dummy load carrying handle is included. Dimensions are 7. Wet dummy loads of the gallon-can type have been around for over half a century, beginning with the venerable "Cantenna" dummy loads. DX Engineering Verified Purchase.
